Good week for St. Louisans who like rock; bad week for folks who like sleep
I know it’s such a drag to go to shows on weekdays, but the amount of shows coming through St. Louis this week is plain ridiculous. Admit it, you’re already planning to get by this week on power naps and shots of 5 Hour Energy poured discretely in your coffee mug. If not, here’s the itinerary for the ridiculosity that’s about to ensue this week:
Monday
Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham – the genius behind “Never Going Back Again,” “The Ledge,” “Holiday Road,” and countless others – is playing at the Pageant. I heard they were giving away free tickets to this show at last week’s Neko Case concert, which is kind of sad. It’s almost enough to make me wish I went to Neko’s concert. Almost.
The Bluebird has pulled together an impressive bill consisting of Dead Confederates, Catfish Haven, Lovelikefire, and hometown heroes Jon Hardy & The Public. I don’t know why, but nobody seems to be talking about this even though it should be a pretty cool show.
Tuesday
My old hometown favorites the Heartless Bastards are playing with the exuberant folk troubador Langhorne Slim from Brooklyn at the Duck Room. I’m not too familiar with Slim’s discography, but regular Post-Rockist contributor Fancy Dan put this little number on a mix for me a while back and I whole-heartedly echo its sentiments:
Langhorne Slim – “I Love To Dance”
Lots more after the jump…
Eli “Paperboy” Reed is at Off Broadway. I would have no idea who he is if his name wasn’t mentioned along with Sharon Jones as being part of a new-Soul revival on a bit on NPR.
Awesome Color, Intelligence, and locals Skarekrauradio will be at the Billiken Club for those who have a bit more chillaxed definition of what constitutes a “song.”
Oh, and ZZ Top is going to be at the Fabulous Fox. You can rest assured that the theater will be packed to the gills with sharp-dressed gents aiming to impress. By “sharp-dressed gents” I mean “men in pit-stained Rams T-shirts and acid-washed jean shorts”; and by “aiming to impress” I mean “totally confused because they’ve never heard ZZ Top outside of a strip club.”
Wednesday
Gordon Lightfoot, yes, that Gordon Lightfoot, will be at the Fox.
Ani DiFranco will be at the Pageant with all the single gals and righteous grrls.
Thursday
Who are you kidding? You’re not going out to watch a stupid rock show this night when the Palin/Biden debates are taking place at Wash U. Come over to my place before the debates — I’ll be making “Witch Hunters 4 Palin” signs. If we’re lucky, we’ll get a good spot behind Chris Matthews’ desk outside the event.
Friday
Also from the “I had no idea this person was still alive and/or touring” category, Rick Springfield is going to be at the “Family Arena” (never been; catchy name for a venue, though). Your mom is going. And you’re jealous.
Saturday
Ryan Adams & The Cardinals will be at the Fox Theater. I hear he’s going to play “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman,” which should be your cue to suavely put your arm around your date.
More interestingly, The Strolling Cones Cock and Bull Circus will kick off around 4:00 at Off Broadway. According to the MySpace, which only features a paltry 56 friends, the Circus is a “mini festival of local and regional Purveyors of Rock, Skronk, Shoegazing and Sonic Splendor.” Sounds skronktacular. Bunnygrunt; Floorian; Stella Mora; Tone Rodent; The Saturday Nights; Troubadour Dali; Learn, Artist; The Tambourine Club; and Lepers TV are all playing. And I don’t know why the venue is being so coy about the event, but you can download a mix of tunes from all the aforementioned for free right over here. Zoinks!
