It’s just kind of weird. This is a list of The Decemberists’ next three shows:
11/11/08 – Wellmont Center, Montclair, NJ, USA
11/12/08 – Wharton Center, East Lansing, MI, USA
11/24/08 – The Wiltern, Los Angeles, CA, USA
It just doesn’t make sense. With what is surely a very large load of instruments and equipment, possibly equal only to the procession of floob-flobbers, tar-tinkers, who-whoopers, and blum-bloopers of those darn, merry Whos down in the Whoville, you’d think that The Decemberists would plan out a tour with a little bit more economy of distance and time.
But perhaps it’s more than a weird fluke that they’re coming through the Mitten tomorrow evening. At least that’s the way I’d look at it. There are few bands that I’d drive 90 minutes to see on a Wednesday with the knowledge that I’ll be driving 90 minutes back home late at night, but lately I’ve finally listened seriously to The Crane Wife, which I hadn’t really listened to at all when it was first released nor since. This album has been flowing from my iPod through my headphones, down my ear canals, through my synapses, straight to the depths of my heart for the past two weeks. Then lo! I check the Decemberists website for the first time in over two years and they’re playing a show in East Lansing–an improbable, completely illogical night and place to play!
It’s probably just a coincidence, but I see a design. And a calling. East Lansing, I’m yours. A report to follow afterward.
