Panda Bear – “I’m Not” (Phaseone remix)
Burial – “Archangel” (Phaseone remix)
Grouper – “Heavy Water / I’d Rather Be Sleeping” (Phaseone remix)
Sometimes I have no idea how local news filters through to me. The other day I was reading the New York-based blog Pretty Much Amazing, who had been reading the Austin-based Gorilla vs. Bear, who had somehow stumbled across the St. Louis-area producer Phaseone, whom I had never heard of before. Now, I’m not exactly up on most local hip-hop happenings, but this made me stop and take notice.
Amateur remixologists seem to be cropping up everywhere these days, but Phaseone doesn’t appear interested in churning out a watered-down Timbaland imitation. Working with indie source material as enigmatic as the fractal pop of Panda Bear and the milky codeine folk of Grouper, Phaseone is retooling the atmospheric vibe of these tracks, coaxing melodic elements into rhythmic elements and laying down a thick slab of synth that muscles through the music, giving it an eerily physical presence. Taking cues from other left-field producers like Flying Lotus, Black Milk, and the late great J Dilla, he starts with a hard and steady beat but lets the center shift organically, fluidly, like on the “Archangel” remix, where subtle changes of tempo can lift the song to whole new levels.
Phaseone also has Mad Weight, a 48-track collection of robo-soul and hip-hop instrumentals, available as a free download on his MySpace page. Despite the Pollard-esque quantity of tracks it’s surprisingly cohesive — all wheat, no chaff. DJ Trackstar guests. Definitely worth downloading, especially if you don’t feel like waiting around for the next installment of the Beat Konducta series.
