I’m disappointed in myself personally that I only just started listening to Cryptacize’s 2008 release Dig That Treasure. Singer/guitarist Nedelle Torrisi’s solo album From the Lion’s Mouth is one of my all-time favorite albums by a female artist. I still listen to that album a few times every couple months. Back in old 2005 I stumbled upon the gorgeous “The Natural Night” while perusing the Kill Rock Stars website for free mp3s and immediately became infatuated by Nedelle’s tender, child-like voice, and her knack for endearingly singing notes directly between a note and it’s relative flat or sharp, an area that makes the note neither flat nor sharp but irresistible.
Cryptacize, formed in 2006 with Chris Cohen and Michael Carreira, situates Nedelle’s darling voice within disjointed and interestingly spare pop structures. The songs trouble the listening ear. The sweet honey of the vocals poring over music with lots of stops and sudden key changes. It’s hard to concentrate on both the music and the vocals at once, but together they somehow make an entrancing combination. Mythomania is sure to be one of my favorite albums of the year if it’s anything like its predecessor.
Cryptacize, please make it to Detroit in 2009!

I’m not sure if Voxtrot has an LP or EP in the works currently (I’m a bad researcher of the wwws) but I suspect one will be ready soon with this new track popping up out of nowhere. I’m really not sure what bloggers were thinking by trashing the Voxtrot self-titled LP. Sure the EPs were great, but that Voxtrot LP was just as amazing (at least I thought so).
“Trepanation Party” utilizes synths and a crunchy funk guitar for a dancier feel that may be the new album’s MO. Voxtrot, please come to Detroit in 2009.

I missed the boat on It’s Never Been Like That when Phoenix released it in ’06, but luckily I have great friends who are on top of things. Thanks, Zoz. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix might be the album of 2009.
Phoenix, cross the pond in 2009 and play Detroit.

If you need Mythomania or Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, let me know.
i can’t stop listening to Wolfgang, it’s already to the point of being worn out.
Pssst… czech yer links, Scotter. Cryptacize are coming to the Pike Room next Sunday with Ariel Pink’s HG.
Um, that date was NOT on their myspace page as of yesterday when I last czeched.
THAT, my friend, is proof positive that this blog is a major player and power-broker in Indie music today and, in addition, gets things done right.
Which means that Phoenix will probably call me in the next few days asking if they can make their Midwestern debut in my dining room. Tickets are $10 kids.
Lisztomania by Phoenix is my favorite song of the year so far, that’s not saying much considering how shitty the music of 2009 has been.
Indie is dead.
