Tonight at Magic Stick, Detroit: The Dears, Great Northern
A good show at the Magic Stick Monday night. Quebeqois The Dears’ headline. Their Missiles ended up on a lot of year-end lists last year, but I’ve only just gotten into the album. After seeing Leonard Cohen on Saturday (it was great–review to come!) this will be my second night in three nights spent with French-Canadians. I just spent 10 minutes now trying to think up a bon mot that includes Arcade Fire and Tim Hortons to describe the feeling, but have decided to just move on and post The Dears’ weird video for “Money Babies.”
Opening for The Dears is LA’s Great Northern. Great Northern’s rock songs harken back to mid-90s bands like Garbage, but I can’t help but think that the band’s name is a tribute to their other touchstone, The Delgados‘ excellent The Great Eastern. The second half of Great Northern’s new album Remind Me Where the Light Is is full of the kind of ambient electronic sounds and entrancing pop melodies that made me fall for The Delgados a few years ago.
I’m looking forward to hearing how The Dears and Great Northern’s more intricate music will translate on the stage, particularly at the Magic Stick where (as just about everyone must admit) the sound quality and the mix hasn’t historically been great for capturing intricacy.
Have a track from Great Northern, and see you at the show.
