Passionate Introverts: Another Post-Rockist Mix 2009
Shoegaze splintered into several different directions after its early-’90s heyday: Slowdive went ambient, Chapterhouse went dance, and bands like Seefeel always straddled the line between dream pop and experimental electronic. Most bands went belly up. At the time, it seemed like these acts were just desperate to hop aboard any trend that would help them stay relevant in a post-Loveless world, but these days it’s interesting to observe as artists from seemingly disparate genres — genres populated by the dream pop diaspora — are creeping toward an unintentional resurgence in the shoegaze aesthetic. The similarities are probably all incidental or just figments of my overactive blogger’s imagination, but the recent uptick in fractally distorted guitars and hazily processed electronics by a cadre of unassociated synth-pop artists, dubstep producers, and bedroom indie savants is too exquisite to go unmentioned. It’s like they’ve hooked up a distortion pedal to my nerve receptors and flood my system with endorphins everytime they switch it on.
Regardless of how you choose to categorize the tunes below, it’s no mere accident that the hand of Andrew Weatherall is behind the boards on one song; his presence is definitely felt on others.
