I believe the awful synth in “A Mystical Preparative to Lewdness” is the “spiritual electrification through the index finger” mentioned in “Topeka and San Antonio”. There’s an interview somewhere where Matt describes the character in Preparative to Lewdness getting electrocuted.

Excellent review, it’s nice to know there are other Matthew Friedberger Fanboys out there.

you make a good point here–it’s almost impossible to argue the force and nuance of your argument. my only retort is that if you can imagine she’s singing to/about any other unnamed, unknown person, i believe it’s her most powerful album and unbelievably catchy too. we’ve played it about a billion times and we can’t get tired of it.
